KENYA CUEVAS🌈
I recently heard about this character, but I became interested when I heard a part
of his story. I was working from home one afternoon and on the other side of the
room my daughter was watching television, she was listening to a program called
"Beyond Pink",🌺 where the presenter interviews empowered women in a special
way. Just hearing the kindness and love with which he spoke I began to listen from
across the room as it caught my attention and I began to pay attention to his story,
I told my daughter to turn up the volume and then I stopped to look who was
speaking and I was even more interested when I saw her, her face reflected hope,
perseverance, love, forgiveness, strength, a lot of strength and I was unavoidable
crying when listening to her story of struggle, injustice, pain. I will tell you a little
about who this character is that struck me that day.
Kenya Cuevas was born in Mexico City, she is the youngest of 7 siblings and was
raised by her maternal grandmother, since her father had another family and her
mother emigrated to the United States. Her brothers used alcohol and drugs for as
long as she can remember; many times they mistreated and beat her because of
her way of being.
From an early age she felt the disintegration of the family, abandonment, violence
and mistreatment, her grandmother was the only one who defended her but
unfortunately she died when she was 9 years old. Kenya. They also lived in
extreme poverty. Kenya had to leave her house at a very young age and one day
on the street she saw a trans woman, live and in full color. In the midst of that
abandonment, rage, and above all, innocence, she asked him for help to see
herself as she was. It was through her that she entered the world of the street,
drugs, prostitution, abuse and all kinds of dangers, and it was there that she later
contracted HIV. She was unjustly imprisoned. Fortunately, in jail she stopped using
drugs and turned her life around. She started supporting people with HIV/AIDS
who were in prison and that gave meaning to her life.
Upon leaving prison, with a new purpose, she Kenya began to ensure the rights of
sex workers because there were no adequate conditions to practice, as happens in
other industries. In this case, there was a lack of supplies such as condoms or HIV
tests to protect themselves and obtain retroviral treatment.
After years of effort, battles and perseverance, she got an appointment with the
Government in turn and they proposed to open an NGO, currently known as the
"Casa de las Muñecas Tiresas". Today they are present in 7 cities and in 2 of them
there are shelters🌈
