Live Healthy and Free

In June 2013 I was transferred to the Marine Infantry Battalion No. 40 in Tumaco-Nariño. The arrival at the Pearl of the Pacific made me curious to see the airport guarded by National Police and Army personnel on all sides, jet helicopters with personnel from Army and fumigation planes. On the way to the Brigade I saw checkpoints with barricades that covered the personnel that provided security there, however, it was not new to be in an environment in these conditions, but I made a mental note of what I observed.

I entered the area on Monday at 10:00 a.m. and I was assigned to an ALPHA 33 patrol with a point of 00-04-04-37-00 under the command of a Second Sergeant, I made my presentation to the patrol commander, curiously He already knew my capabilities and where I came from, apparently my training influenced my arrival in that specific unit and place.

The patrol covered the general area of Invilì-Nariño, the area of responsibility began at the entrance of Tangareal del Mira, with several kilometers over the Mira river to La Loma, the patrol fulfilled security and area control functions throughout the area, passing the river was the Vega-Nariño and further up a town in Ecuador.

The civilian personnel in the area were totally disaffected by the military personnel, you could not talk to anyone or go to a store or drugstore, everything had to be coordinated from Tumaco, so public order in the area was very complex, very few people were who dared to speak to us when we exercised area control, the hotel plan had to be fulfilled in perfect synchrony since we could not spend the night in the same place because the minefields were booming, the place where we stayed the night and moved was mined by the enemy.

After 15 days of being in the area we were attacked, we had moved and we reached an uninhabited place near the river, but even when we searched to be safer when we moved, they always managed to locate us quickly, that night they attacked one of the sentinels, but they did not mention that in that sector, because it was of high risk, the guard was double, the attacked sentry took cover and the other sentinel supported the place where he had seen the flashes coming from with heavy fire.

In the river, boats began to move and the attack by the second reaction nucleus began and they responded with nourished fire. As the fire had already ceased in the first nucleus, I left the commander of the EXDE group and went to the second nucleus to support with the use of flares and organize the use of support weapons, at this point the patrol commander had already reported the start of contact to the battalion command.

After that night we became more present in the area, the civilian population began to approach us and although they harassed us almost every day, we had full control of the town, the area and the ferry, we began to identify the enemy, which we approached. when we did. We found, anywhere, in the deep searches we found the so-called soft-stompers trying to plant mines, at night the sentinels identified the soft-stompers with the night minks trying to subdue them and get closer to them, it was evident that the methods they switched attacks, and we were more efficient by staying one step ahead of the enemy.

I end my chronicle by saying that those Marines always had the best attitude to come into contact with the enemy and do a good job, the NCOs always sought to keep the morale of the personnel high, they were overcoming great challenges, the risk was extremely high and my Lancer pocket manual became my favorite reading, the dog Sacha the most beloved canine and his guide acquired extraordinary experience working with his animal, we all made great sacrifices in that commission and although we had a Marine wounded by During the 90 days of the commission, our hard work achieved the return of the Combat Elements and patrols of Professional Infantry from other Battalions, they could enter the area and exercise registration and control of the area. At the end of the commission in January, we all came out alive! healthy and free!
