CRONICLE
CHRONICLE
OF DIOMEDES DÍAZ MAESTRE
Born May 26, 1957, in La Junta, San Juan
del Cesar, La Guajira.
Son of Rafael María Díaz and Elvira
Maestre.
He grew up in a
peasant family. He sang since childhood and it was his uncle on his mother's
side, the composer Martín Maestre, who guided him in his first steps.
In Villanueva he
attended primary school at the Liceo Colombia. In this town, a friend
accidentally stoned his right eye when they were trying to pull down mangoes
from a tree, which left him one-eyed.
He worked as a
gardener and later as a messenger at the Radio Guatapurí radio station,
alternating these jobs with his night studies at the Loperena National School,
until the fifth year of high school. Rafael Orozco recorded the song Cariñito
de mi vida, which consolidated Diomedes as a composer and Orozco as a singer
with accordionist Emilio Oviedo. In a salute in the song Orozco coined and
immortalized his nickname "El Cacique de La Junta" for being an
illustrious son of the town embedded in Colombia's La Guajira.
He won third
place in the category of unpublished song in the Festival de la Leyenda
Vallenata and with accordionist Náfer Durán recorded, in 1977, his first
production as an independent artist, Herencia Vallenata, in which the song El
chanchullito, also composed by him, stood out. In the same year he recorded the
album Tres canciones, with Elberto 'El Debe' López, and the following year,
with accordionist Juan Humberto 'Juancho' Rois, he released the album La
locura. He formed a duo with Nicolás 'Colacho' Mendoza, with whom he worked
until 1984. Gonzalo Arturo 'El Cocha' Molina, was his accordionist from 84 to
87, recording titles such as Sin medir distancias and Si te vas te olvido.
Considered one of
the most important exponents of vallenato, songs such as Bonita, Tú eres le reina,
Mi primera cana and Sin ti, are part of his extensive list of compositions. He
sold more than 20 million records throughout his career, one of the Colombian
artists with more records sold in history. His followers were called
"diomedistas", while he called them his "fanaticada"? He
had his best decades in the 80s and 90s.
In 2010 he won
the Latin Grammy in the Cumbia/Vallenato category and in early December 2013,
he released the single No llores mama, as a preview of the album La vida del
artista, which was released on December 19 of the same year.
His personal life
was marked by several controversies, alcohol and drug consumption, accidents,
judicial matters and the death in strange circumstances of Doris Adriana Niño,
after being present at a meeting in the vallenato singer's apartment? Diomedes
was convicted of murder and was a fugitive for two years. After turning himself
in, he spent a total of 36 months reduced from an initial sentence of 12 years.
Diomedes Diaz had
more than 10 steady partners in his life and also mistresses with whom he had
28 recognized children.
He died on December 22, 2013 in Valledupar due to cardiorespiratory arrest
